Girls Night Out!

Last night we had a Girls Night Out that for once no boys crashed. We all went out to dinner and then downtown. I'm not feeling very descriptive right now-so all I will say is that it was fun night. It was great to see Monica and Mary who I haven't seen in awhile. We'll definitly have to do it again soon!

Bye Bye Barry........
It's always a little sad to see a coach leave Nebraska, especially one who is as nice as Barry Collier, but with that said, YAY he's gone! I am not a huge NU basketball fan, but I am so sick of the Huskers not playing well in the Big 12 and not making it to the NCAA tourney. I realize that since NU is a "football" school the excuse is that a school can not be both a football & basketball school, but I think that excuse is ridiculous. Other schools, like Texas, UCLA, & Florida all have high profile basketball and football teams, so there is no reason that Nebraska, with the incredible fan base NU has, to have a stellar football program and a respectable basketball program. That being said I hope AD Steve Pederson will commit to the basketball program and rebuild the facilities and hire a Big 12 caliber coach. It will be interesting to see who gets the job. I think a great candidate that no one is talking about is Kevin McKenna. He was the former coach of UNO and is now an assistant at Creighton. I realize he may not have the experience to coach a program in a major market, but I still think with university support he could be an incredible pick up. Just my thoughts. I was just really impressed with him at UNO. Anyway-I hope Collier does well at Butler and here's to hoping NU has a decent basketball program someday!

Fantasy Football.......
The KingCobraKillers are back! Kevin has once again started a Fantasy Football league. If anyone is interested in playing let him or me know! So in a month from now I will be thoroughly engulfed in football! Please do not contact me if the Huskers lose.

Former Nebraska starting pitcher, Shane Komine, had his first major league start last week for the Oakland A's. He ended up with a no decision, but only allowed 4 hits in 6 innings pitched and had one earned run, which was a home run. Still not bad for the first start, plus he is starting again next Tuesday against the Rangers.

Horse Racing!!!

This past weekend was the annual live race meet at Horseman's Park. The weather was finally not over 100 degrees. I think every live meet since HP has opened was over 100, so it was a wonderful change! The races were wonderful, I fell in love with a mare named Plaid, who was beautiful! Over the course of three days I lost $17.00, which wasn't too awful. I did miss the excitement of Thursday's 1st race in which the starting gate tractor broke down and couldn't pull the starting gate out of the way of the racing horses. I think I would have had a heart attack and jumped over the gate and tried to push the gate out of the way. Thankfully there was an outrider who led ran out onto the track and led the horses around it. They honored him and his horse, Toad, in the winner's circle on Sunday, which was very well deserved. If you couldn't make it this year, plan on attending next year. It's free, cheap food and drinks, and a LOT of excitement!!

Some of the pictures are from when we went out after the races and well got a bit silly. The old people are my aunt & uncle and Chris & Scotty. (haha "old people" :) )

Yes that's right to Oklahoma. Kevin had to go so I went along. But everyone should be proud of me, I did not get into one single fight with a Sooner or a Cowboy. To me that shows I've grown up a little! ;) It was my first time to Oklahoma, so it also was my first time to see red dirt, which I guess was ok. I mean it really was just dirt. We stayed in Stillwater, which is where the U of Oklahoma St is. I got to see the baseball and football stadiums and the nice-nice-nice equestrian team headquarters. We then went to Oklahoma City. We walked around the "Bricktown" area which is sorta like the Old Market, but bigger and with a cool river running through it. We also spent some time at the memorial for the OKC bombing, which was very moving. If you ever get a chance to stop by OKC, it is well worth the time to stop and pay your respects. It was only for three days, but still nice to get out of Omaha for awhile.

Broken Bow

Over the last weekend in June, Sheryl, Scott, and I traveled to Sheryl's old stomping ground around Broken Bow. We not only competed in two barrel racings, but also went on a trail ride through the canyons and hills of central Nebraska. What I know now is Nebraska is certainly NOT flat. The country side was beautiful. We also took a trail ride around Sheryl's family's ranch and went to a rodeo. The barrel racings for me went well, except for the first race in which I had issues with my hat , which led to a not so great time. The second run I did much better and almost placed in the 3-D. It was really tough competition, but everyone was super nice and we had a lot of fun. I do highly recommend a trip out to Central Nebraska if you ever do get a chance. Check out these pictures to see how beautiful it is!!

This picture is of Sheryl on Gypsy, Scott on Pat, and me on Chance before the trail ride near Calloway. The trail ride went up and down some really steep hills, which for a city girl like me was somewhat scary. Plus I guess I am very afraid to fall over the cliff of a canyon, so I really tried to stay away from the cliffs. The best part of the ride was at the very end. We had to ride up this huge hill to the top of a ridge where a breakfast was being served. Along with the horseback riders, hay-rack rides also took non-riders to the ridge. The ride was beautiful. It was in the middle of nowhere. The only man made structure you could see was a windmill. It really was refreshing from the view and noise of the city. Oh yeah, but the best part was that Sheryl and I ran full speed up the hill on our horses. I frankly was a little scared Chance would trip or something, but the only thing she did was leap over some odd looking grass like a steeplechaser. I giggled uncontrollably the whole way to the top of the hill! All I know is that I can't wait to go next year!

Joshua visits

Last month, Kevin's 3 1/2 year old, Joshua visited Kevin. I think they both had fun and it was funny to see Josh wear Kevin down. A funny story, but since my name is close to the dinosaur "Triceratops," Josh thought it was funny to call me "Sara-tops" most of the week. It really was very cute! He is a very sweet little boy and Chris, his mom, is doing a great job with him!
These are some pictures from when he came to visit me at the barn and had his first horseback ride. He was a little scared at first, but Kevin and I convinced him to ride with me. He looks a lot like Kevin, doesn't he?

This last month Sheryl and I have of course been doing some barrel racing. This picture is from Fremont about a month ago. I won the 2-D (and got $88!!!!!!!!!!) and Sheryl got 2nd in the 3-D. So we were both very happy with our runs, but even happier with our checks! (And yes I know I look like an idiot in this picture! But it's a CHECK!!)

We also went to Broken Bow, which I'll tell more about in a later post.

Then last week we went to Lincoln for a run. I didn't win any money, I was just out of the 2-D money, but I can honestly say it was one of, if not the best of my runs so far. Chance and I were smooth around the barrels and I actually kicked between the barrels. We did end up with a 16.0014 or something like that. As it was one of my better runs, we did not have a video camera or picture taken. It would figure. I do just keep running it over and over in my head though. We now have a week and a half off before the next one!

(German Day was almost as much fun as Shane had looking through his purse).

Yesterday was German Day at the German-American Society. Kevin and I volunteered for a couple hours running the "Balloon-Dart" both. It was a strenuous job that involved drinking beer and throwing darts at Kevin, but somebody had to do it. After a quick break so that I could go scoop horse poop, we returned and proceeded to do what we do best revel in German food, Warsteiner Dunkel, and of course polka music. We had a great time even without having a shot of Jaeger (stunning I know, no Jaeger). After German Day we went to a bar and watched Adam do his standard karaoke set of Britney Spears. It was a great day and if you missed it make plans to go to Oktoberfest!

Now that I am the ripe old age of 25 I feel wiser, more mature, and of course more responsible but thankfully the night that we celebrated my b-day I was still only 24....so hey I didn't have to be any of that! It really was a fun night and I was really happy that so many people came out to help me celebrate! Thanks again everyone! I'll write more about it, unfortunately I have to read for my summer class. Why did I sign up for a summer class again?

First she's almost 80, she's never really liked the fact that I ride and have a horse, and although she does have a sense of humor, she doesn't show it as much, plus we've always been a pretty modest and conservative (although for her not politically) family. I realize this isn't that bad, but I definitely think this is funny.

I have not had much time to write on this blog, so now I'll try to play catch up from the past couple of weeks. First these are some pictures from the last game of the Nebraska-Creighton baseball series, in which the Huskers won and swept the series, thus declaring their baseball dominace of the lovely state of Nebraska. Since this game the Huskers have nearly given me an ulcer with their up and down playing, but did end up beating Texas and making it to the Big 12 conference Championship game, where they lost to the "mighty" Jayhawks of Kansas. (Anne then proceed to rub that in, jerk). The Huskers did end up getting a regional and a top 8 national seed, so if they win their regional they will host a super regional. This is important because it gives them homefield advantage during the playoffs. This weekend is the regional where they play Manhattan, San Francisco, and the Miami Lame-icanes. Anyway here are pics from the NU-CU game. (Remember to click on the picture to be directed to more pics.)

TO VOTE TODAY!!!!!

In the last mid-term election only 14% of registered voters in Omaha voted. How scary is it that such a small number decides so many important positions? And if anyone feels that these small local elections don't matter: don't forget that we vote for state legislature today and they are the ones that passed LB 1024 to break up OPS. Also there's a vote for the Douglas County sheriff, don't you want to have a choice in who is supposed to be keeping us all safe? And finally if you are a college student, there is also the elections for the UNO regents. They have direct impact on the day to day life of students, yet those who go there, the 18-24 year olds vote the least, with the 25-32 right behind. SO it's a privilege to vote, go VOTE!!!

Grandpa's Funeral

It's finally time for the Kentucky Derby!!!! The Derby is this Saturday at 5pm (CST). I, for the first time in my life, have not been obsessed with handicapping the Derby. Usually I print off hundreds of sheets of paper full of pedigrees and mathmatical formulas to try and figure out which horse will win the race. So this year, while I am probably appearing to be more of a normal person, I don't have a great idea of how this race will be run, yet. I feel so far behind I think I will skip studying for finals and just focus on studying the Derby. :) I will give my picks at the end of the week but if anyone is interested in learning more about the horses running, and possibly making a pick on this blog, please do. My Grandpa

Yesterday my Grandpa Miller passed away at 2:15pm. He was 90 years old. I just wanted to take a couple of minutes to write about his life so that anyone who reads this might get a glimpse of his very interesting life.
My grandpa was born on Christmas day 1915 in a sod house near Marquette, which is north of Grand Island. He had one sister, Grace. By a very young age he was doing a man's work out in the fields of the family farm. My grandpa loved working with horses (maybe that was passed down to me!) and loved the land. My great great Grandfather was friends with Buffalo Bill Cody and my grandpa actually met him once. As an adult my grandpa moved to Omaha and was working in a hospital when he met my Grandma. They were married and had three boys, my dad being the youngest, and according to him the most handsome. They were never well off, but my Grandma supplied a lot of love and my grandpa a work ethic and stable living. My dad told me that my grandpa would smoke 5 cigars a day, in addition to 2 packs of cigarettes, plus he chewed! (And he lived to be 90?!?!)
What I remember growing up was that my grandpa was outgoing as anyone I have ever known. Daily he would walk to the nearby auto mechanic and laundrymat to discuss what was going on in the neighborhood and reminisce about life on the farm. He was also a lover of garage sales and loved to find some trinket that to him was a treasure. He also was a pack rat, which I also think I inherited. After my grandma was moved to Wahoo because of Alzheimers, my Grandpa got an apartment nearby. As you can imagine he knew the whole place, and practically the whole town within a few days. When he moved to the care center, it was the same story. He gave the nurses out there a hard time, but I have no doubt he was one of their favorite patients. After my Grandma died two years ago my Grandpa was never the same. Years of hard work had made his body deteriorate until he was confined to a wheelchair, but he never lost the ability to joke and smile or the ability to wiggle his ears!
Now that he's gone I know he will be greatly missed but at least I know he's up in heaven with my Grandma and the rest of his family, along with a few beloved dogs, cats, horses, and cattle. And now that he's not confined to his wheelchair he's probably discussing world events with Ronald Reagan and old Nebraska farmers right after checking out any heavenly garage sales.

Top 10 Reasons I'm Proud to be a Husker (during the Spring Game):
10) At the annual Red/White Spring Game (aka a scrimage!) 58,000 people show up, and it would have been more if the North Stadium wasn't under construction
9) During the playing of the National Anthem, the whole stadium sang along
8) Once again, even though it was practice the whole stadium "oohed and ahhed" for every near interception and 10 yard run.
7) Fairbury Brand hotdogs!!! They're dyed Husker Red! (not to hide weird parts!!)
6) Again for a practice, everyone in the stadium was wearing their full Husker regailia, including facepaint and cornheads!
5) The defending National Champions, Texas, had only 48,000 at their Spring Game! HA we beat them at something!
4) Nebraska really is a RED state! All the candidates and their campaigns were Republicans!
3) The three Heisman trophy winners came out on to the field, Johnny "the Jet" Rogers, Mike Rozier, and Eric Crouch.
2) Ten years after his death, Husker fans still remember and mourn the life of a true Husker hero, #18 Brooke Berringer.
1) Even though its the Spring game, when you hear the first notes of the tunnel walk, goosebumps appear and the stadium just goes nuts as you watch on HuskerVision the Huskers leaving the locker room, touching the lucky horseshoe, and running out on the field. It's magic!

Oh and #1A: The other great thing about the spring game, when it's over you can walk over to beautiful Hawks Field and watch the baseball team crush the Aggies.
And I guess I should add #1B: It was also a great day because there were no tornados in Lincoln while I was there. :)

Barrel Racing Finals

Today was our last barrel racing of this series, so now comes the bigger ones. If anyone one wants to donate to the Sara for Barrel Racing Fund, please let me know. There is probably a barrel racing every weekend from now on, so donations would be appreciated! :)
Anyway Chance and I had a good barrel pattern, not as fast as last week, but a decent pattern with lots of room for improvement. I have really gained a lot of confidence riding her and we are working better as a team, which I guess was my goal from the beginning (well .....that's what everyone says when they don't win any money). I was extremly happy with my Pole pattern. Not only did we not knock down a pole for the first time in a while, we finally broke the 22 second mark with a 21.......I forget. It was much better though!
Sheryl and Gypsy, coming off an incredible barrel ride last weekend (wooohoo 15.8 and who cares if you knocked down a barrel!), did not knock down a barrel and got a 16.1! And they didn't knock down a pole!
Now that this series is over I think Sheryl and I can agree that we've both learned a lot, have met great people, and had fun! And now I'm super tired and can hardly type so enjoy the pictures!!

FYI-Tomorrow at 3pm the UNO Mavericks play Boston U. in the NCAA Hockey Tournament. This is the first time UNO has ever been to this tournement. Basically they are one of the top 16 teams in the nation! Not bad for little UNO. They will be on Cox channel 3 or on am radio: 1290! Let's GO MAVS!!!!!

Another St. Patty's Day has come and gone and now another year to wait before the next one! We all met up at the Nest where they had $25.00 all you can drink beer. As you can tell by the pictures everyone got a their $25 worth! Between starting at 12:30, playing rigged drinking games, meeting a leprecaun, watching Chad who's "21" get drunk and puke, Irish car bombs, dancing, Adam once again ending up soaking wet with beer, and the matchmaking going on it was a fun time! Hey we never had any green beer! Oh well....can't wait for next year!

YAY!! The Nebraska basketball team just won their first Big XII tournament game in 6 years!! Collier might have just bought himself another year! They play Oklahoma next! GO Huskers-if we win the whole damn thing (which would truly be like hell freezing over) we will make it to the "Big Dance!"

And more Husker news....
The baseball team after an incredible weekend of beating Notre Dame, Arizonia, and Minnesota, takes on Alabama this weekend at Hawks Field in Lincoln. The Husker's ace, Joba Chamberland, will not play though. He's not seriously hurt, it's just for precaution! The Huskers are now 8-2 on the year.

Avid "wasabier" Omar can't believe the burn and nose tingleing but said "there's just something about stuffing a spoonful of wasabi in your mouth that makes you feel alive. It's like no other feeling in the world! I NEED more WASABI!!!"

We are sad to report that since this publication Omar was arrested on suspision of wasabi overdosing. He is now in rehab and is expected to make a full recovery in 5 years. Hopefully.

Judy's (the lady I work for) little two year old filly came home from a long long long stay at the vet's. Here are some pictures of "Shiny Red Penny" aka Olivia. She's been through a horrible virus that almost killed her and then the medicine that saved her gave her a belly full of ulsers that again almost killed her. So she is pretty tough and strong (my right arm's pulled muscles can testify to her strength), and she is very sweet! If anyone wants to come spoil her they can. She is taking the next year off before she begins her rigorous training for the two horse bobsled.

I can't even believe it, but Brandi called me Friday night and wow, what she had to say just blew my mind! It snowed in California! Crazy huh? :)

NIN Concert

Last night was the Nine Inch Nails concert in Lincoln. It was a pretty good time. The people who went were myself, Anne, Derek, Adam, Chad, my sister Chris and her boyfriend Scotty. We didn't see the opening band but oh well!!! The concert itself I though was pretty good, the sound was awesome, Trent Reznor sounded and I must say looked pretty good as well. I thought he was a little lackluster on a few of the songs, especially "Closer." Maybe that was just me though. He played some old stuff which rocked. The crowd was ok. I wasn't up front for too long so I don't know for sure. Some punk ass grabbed my ass and Anne and I jumped at him and gave him a black eye and a bloody nose. Oh wait, that's just what happened in my mind. It was soooo cold last night, maybe one degree? After the concert the boys were so sweaty and wet that they were steaming. I don't envy Anne for having to ride home with them. Oh and the really good pictures I didn't take, but they look the same as what I would have taken if I had took my camera up front. All together good time and good show!

Now that football is over and my life feels so bleak a ray of sunlight has broken through the clouds and fills my heart with joy......what is that ray of light? Kevin? Yeah right! :) It's Nebraska baseball!! The Husker's first game is tomorrow, Thursday the 16th against Charston Southern in South Carolina! The first Husker home game is March 10th against the Crimson Tide-'Bama! I won't go on and on about it but I'm just so happy college baseball is starting I had to share it with everyone.

Barrel Racing #2

Another weekend of running.....and another weekend of learning. Chance and I did not have a good day on Saturday. We had two broken patterns meaning, I really screwed up. But I did learn a lot and hopefully will be able to put that to good use. Sheryl and Gypsy had their best barrel time on Saturday. Congrats to her! Sunday was better for me. Chance and I didn't run as fast, but we had good patterns which is what we really need to focus on instead of speed right now. So overall another fun weekend! If anyone ever wants to come watch us run Columbus is only an hour and half away and you can drink beer and cheer loud! Here's some more pictures and you will notice that Sheryl and I had a "twin weekend."
Ps-Trinity, none of the pictures of you and Bo turned out. Well really none of the pictures of you turned out. Bo looked good but for some reason the camera seemed to act funny, like it was broken, when ever you were in a picture.

Super Bowl XL

I can't believe that football season is almost over. I am already depressed about waking up on a Saturday or Sunday and not having 15 hours of non stop football to look forward to. This football season went by too fast! At least the Kentucky Derby trail has begun and Husker baseball starts in 14 days (woohoo!!).
So now it's the time for the main event. Super Bowl X-tra L-arge. I really think it's an interesting matchup. Both team look very strong and have a lot going into the game. I think the big difference maker of the game will be if the Steelers shut down Shaun Alexander, will Matt Hasslebeck be able to step up and make plays? The biggest weakness I see for Seattle is that they only played against 5 winning teams (mostly because the NFC sucked this year), they may not be ready to deal with the Steelers. The Steelers may give into the hype surrounding them and they themselves might take the Seahawks for granted.
That being said I will pick the Steelers to win. The Seahawks are 17th overall in defense(even though Grant Wistrom is still #1 in my heart :) ) and I think that hurts them in the end. But it is nice that they made it to the big game for the first time. I think they will be a contender next year as well. So go "Bus" and "Big Ben," Steelers-33 Seahawks 24.

New Car!

I know it's hard to believe that I would possibly want a new car. My current car, a 94 Corrolla, aka the Beast, is beautiful!!! And unique. But yes today I bit the bullet and bought a new car. It's a 2001 Chevy Prizm, green, and has no sheet metal or paddlocks anywhere!! And the trunk acutally closes! I will have a final tribute to the Beast later on, but for now here's the new monster:

Yesterday I was incredibly frustrated while attending one of my poly sci classes. First the teacher said very nochalantly, as if it were the truth and everyone should just except it as that, that except for Great Britian there was no support for the war in Iraq. I guess countries like Austrialia and Poland, and what like 30 more countries just really don't count. The conversation the drove straight into the "Bush is Dumb" crap that if anyone can't tell really pisses me off. I'm very glad to learn about other people's opinion and I think arguring and disscussion are incredible ways to learn and to be opened up to new ideas and new ways of thinking. I am however sick of the disscussions being so very one sided in the university setting. That's why when I was listening to Rush today there was a caller who felt the same way and was disscussing a new website. I'll put the link here and please check it out if you are a conservative at college. (the website is slightly cheesy, but...) I think that if we as conservatives do stand up to the liberal bias at school we will all learn more and not be subject to so much hate. :)

Just a quick word to vent.......If you are a liberal, a Democrat, or just do not like President Bush, could you please please please quit the "Bush is dumb" argument. If that's your best argument to not like him or his policies then you obviously can not think of any better argument against him. Just please come up with intelligent points so I do not have to feel like beating you over the head at your ignorance. Thank you!

Barrel Racing #1

Sheryl and I survived our first barrel racing in Columbus. We both did really well and had a lot of fun! Chance got a little crazy a few times, but overall she was very good. We ran both on Saturday and Sunday. We improved our barrel time by about a second on the Sunday run so that was awesome. Chance ran both of her pole bending
patterns really really well, except the first run in which we, by that I mean me, knocked down the very last pole. Sheryl's horse, Gypsy for being so young and really just starting her soon to be "fabulous" (Sheryl's fav word) career had great patterns and did really well. Sheryl and I were more than thrilled w/ our horses! Plus we met some great people and got to hang out w/ old friends (Eva, Trinity and Jimmy). I'll have better pics next time, but here's a few, and a lot of Chance. (She's sooo pretty who could resist taking her pic?)
